Candidate Statement

The Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics is by far the most influential advocate for mathematics teaching and learning in the state of Georgia. As a mathematics educator for 34 years, I take the job of educating the future work force very seriously. My experiences as a classroom teacher, university professor, and STEM Conference organizer will bring a diverse set of experiences to this position.

As a former high school teacher, I understand the challenges facing K-12 educators and appreciate the role of ongoing professional development in helping these teachers meet those challenges. However, many K-12 educators are not encouraged to pursue professional development for various reasons. As Vice President for Advocacy, I will strive to advocate for the importance for ongoing professional development. As a university professor, I had the honor of preparing pre-service elementary and middle grades teachers to teach mathematics as well as the privilege of working with pre-service secondary teachers. In addition, I have always been a spokesperson for students learning arithmetic in a manner which will easily transfer to algebraic understanding and eventually enable students to better understand higher-level mathematics. As conference organizer for the Georgia Scholarship of STEM Teaching & Learning conference, I created a forum where K-12 teachers, university professors, industry, and policy makers could collaborate. Effective change can only occur when all stakeholders are present and willing to work together. Hence, a growth mindset is an important attribute for all mathematics educators!

The Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics acknowledges the importance of a solid foundation of mathematics for all students and has always been an active voice in support of mathematics teachers. As Vice President for Advocacy, I would be honored to uphold the high standards for which the GCTM has always stood.
