Candidate Statement

My vision for mathematics education is to promote number sense through numeral literacy and hands-on investigations. By providing students authentic learning opportunities, I hope to make math more meaningful for them so that they carry these skills into the workforce. As a math and science teacher, I am able to allow my students to explore both fields while being involved in authentic learning tasks. I engage my students in number talks to help promote numeracy skills and build number sense. The greatest challenge facing math educators seems to be providing students with the meaningful tasks they need to be successful in STEM related jobs once in the workforce. Students often lack basic skills needed to perform such tasks at appropriate levels. As teachers, we struggle with pulling students out of the deficit to reach their full potential. As secretary of the GCTM Executive Committee, I would bring a young teacher’s perspective of math education. I would provide the committee with any thoughts on improving GCTM and the annual conference. I would work diligently and assist other members as needed. It would be an honor to work with some of the most prestigious math educators in the state of Georgia on this committee.
