Candidate Statement

Over 24 years ago, I became involved with Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM) when a friend encouraged me to attend the conference at Rock Eagle. Little did I know how that one conference would influence not just my educational career but my entire life. I came home with new ideas and activities to share with my colleagues and students as well as new friendships I’d developed with people I now consider family. This past year, I left the classroom. It was a difficult decision because I love teaching math. I love that moment of understanding when you know the student “gets it”. What I did not love was seeing my colleagues struggle and feeling like they were in it alone. I wanted to be their support, the way my GCTM family has supported me. I am currently a K-5 Instructional Coach, which is another adventure as all of my experience has been in middle and high school. As GCTM has evolved over the years to promote mathematics education in Georgia, it has been a constant source of support for me. It has helped me to grow personally and professionally. I would like for other teachers to feel the support I have over the years. After all, GCTM stands for Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics; the emphasis on teacher network is where I would like to focus. With so many teachers leaving the profession or struggling, I want to see GCTM providing more support. I feel that steps are being taken in that direction with frequent posts on Facebook, our Summer Academies rotating around the state, and a restructuring of our Regional Representatives. I would like to continue to support and develop these programs for the betterment of all teachers, which in turn will benefit students.
