Candidate Statement

As President, I intend to uphold the mission and vision of GCTM. I believe that all students deserve a high-quality mathematics education. As an active educator, I desire to promote an interest in mathematics by encouraging and supporting a math club/team and/or honor society in every secondary school and the continued proliferation of supplemental mathematical interest activities throughout all levels in elementary schools. I strongly support the ongoing professional development currently offered through the Summer Academies and workshops available at GMC. I believe that GCTM should continue to fill in professional needs in subject areas and grade bands that need additional support. I also support the creation of educator networks across districts for those who teach the same subjects or grade levels and need support and the capability to share resources. Furthermore, I do believe the State of Georgia has some of the best and most innovative teachers of mathematics and would like to continue to see those teachers rewarded for their creativity and excellence with GCTM awards and recognition. Of special interest, I would like to see GCTM sponsor an online platform for new teachers (under 5 years of experience) to connect with veteran teachers for advice, support, sharing of resources, and encouragement. I also would like to see GCTM move forward in a grassroots emphasis with the installation of local representatives who could help disseminate information to districts and school level math teachers while also providing GCTM with the knowledge of the needs of local teachers. Finally, I do believe that GCTM has moved in the right direction towards advocating mathematics and mathematics education to our State Representatives. I would continue to support efforts, such as Math Day at the Capitol, to remind our State Legislature of the importance of mathematics education.
