Candidate Statement

Some of the most important challenges facing math teachers today involve the choices they make that directly impact their students’ mathematical learning experience. In order to help teachers make the best informed decisions, they need to be well informed. Providing this kind of support for teachers is not just about making resources available, but also cultivating their curiosity and engaging them in conversations about those resources that align with best practices.

GCTM can and should be at the forefront of this kind of support. Let’s invite all teachers to this math conversation, engage them in discussions about math content and math pedagogy. Let’s guide teachers to rethink their own practices in order to best serve the students they teach. Let’s use the network of math leaders throughout Georgia to do all of this.

Many teachers across the country are engaging in this “self-guided professional development” now through blogs, on Twitter, and through other forms of social media and have been for years. Let’s invite all Georgia teachers to the ongoing conversation, push their thinking, engage them to ask questions. When this happens, teachers push the limits of their own understandings and grow, becoming better informed.
