Candidate Statement

Having a good understanding of mathematics and statistics is becoming more and more important to being an informed and literate citizen. For many students mathematics has become something they do and endure to help them and their school get a passing grade on a federal or state mandated test. Many of our students don’t see the beauty and joy of mathematics that we see as mathematicians and mathematics educators. We must work harder now than ever before to advocate for good mathematics instruction with political leaders and decision makers at the national, state, and local levels. We need to work to help policy makers understand that what is important is not always easy to measure and that what is easy to measure is not always important. Our students deserve access to the mathematical skills and knowledge that are important and relevant for life in the 21st century rather than just what is easy to measure on a multiple choice test. Our teachers deserve support in doing the jobs that they have been trained to do rather than being tied down completing documentation to prove that they did what they were supposed to do. As mathematics educators, GCTM members must work together to advocate for best practices in all of our schools. We must help get the word out to politicians, business leaders, parents, and stakeholders to help them make better decisions about things that impact us and our students. As Albert Einstein said, “What is popular is not always right and what is right is not always popular.” We must work together to educate those who make decisions about education and to then hold them accountable for making right decisions. As Vice President of Advocacy I will work to keep our membership informed about policies that impact mathematics education and to make sure that policy makes are informed about GCTM’s positions.
