Candidate Statement

For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about mathematics and have felt a calling to teach mathematics to others. A major goal of mine is to nurture positive attitudes. I strive to help others recognize the relevance and joy of mathematics as well as all STEM fields. I enjoy integrating literature, creative writing, and multiple forms of communication into mathematics lessons. Throughout my years as a teacher educator, I have worked to develop an understanding of what is happening in mathematics education policy at the national and state levels and to translate that to my colleagues, doctoral students, and teacher candidates. My own research agenda has had two main areas of focus: (1) teachers’ attitudes toward mathematics and (2) comparative mathematics education in the United States and England. I have been a member of GCTM for more than 25 years and am proud to be a member of an organization with such a strong legacy of advocacy and accomplishment. GCTM plays a powerful role as it provides mathematics teachers of all levels with opportunities to share knowledge, learn from others, collaborate on meaningful initiatives, and advance the causes of mathematics teaching and learning. I would be delighted to serve as Secretary of GCTM. Qualities I would bring to the office include more than 20 years of experience as secretary of Mercer’s Education faculty, a desire for lifelong learning, and a passion for continual growth in mathematics education.
